Willis M. Hawkins Medal of Science

Acellus Academy is proud to have partnered with the United States Army to establish the Willis M. Hawkins Medal of Science, a new science fair award designed to honor the legacy of Willis M. Hawkins—a visionary inventor and one of the founding members of the Institute of Science and Technology (IST).

Throughout his distinguished career, Hawkins made significant contributions to both military and civilian engineering. As the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research and Development, he played a pivotal role in the creation of the M1 Abrams tank, one of the most advanced military vehicles ever developed. He also led the design of the C-130 Hercules, a revolutionary aircraft that continues to play a vital role in airlift operations for the U.S. military and global transportation.

Medal of Science:

This award will be presented annually to middle and high school students whose science fair projects demonstrate strong potential for real-world impact. The award seeks to inspire interest in STEM fields by recognizing innovative projects that could make meaningful contributions to society or industry, and aims to encourage the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.

High School (9-12):

High school students in grades nine through twelve, competing as individuals, are eligible for certificates and awards. Each senior individual project award recipient (Grades 9-12) will receive the following:

• Hawkins Medallion
• Award Certificate

Middle School (6-8):

Middle school students in grades eight and below are eligible for certificates of accomplishment. Each junior individual project award recipient (Grades 6-8) will receive the following:
